Why did Lebron James storm off the court in game 6 last week and say no dice to media interviews? It's obvious: Lebron being Lebron.....It doesn't sound as good as Manny being Manny and I don't think it carries the same punch. Come to think of it, ManRam has the greatest out in the history of athletes being idiots, or normal, depending how you see it: Manny being Manny. Imagine if more athletes, even celebrities adopted this. Lindsay Lohan would surely appreciate the easy-out.
But Lebron wasn't given the free pass and it has taken me a few days to realize that it probably was a mistake. Initially, I understood where LBJ was coming from, and I still do... as do many and some hit it right on the money. In another's words, opponents shouldn't hug it out Shawshank Redemption style.
The Chosen One was going to be the savior of 45 years of Cleveland sports misery. The Browns were the last professional team to win a championship (the pre-Super Bowl NFL Championship) and LBJ knows as well as any, how much the city desperately needs a parade. The Cavs were easily the favorites to win the Eastern Conference, wire to wire, and as everyone knows, the NBA had already slotted a Lakers-Cavs, Kobe-Lebron shootout for the title.
But the Cavs (despite the greatest playoff performance in history by 23) were outplayed and Mike Brown was outcoached by the Master of Panic. Enough about that.
Whether Lebron shook hands with the Magic is his prerogative. As Tiger Woods explains, hockey and golf are really the only sports where a formal handshake is often required. More importantly, these aren't rules, just customs. Coincidence???
But, despite the loss, you must at least acknowledge the media, even if its a quick "I don't want to talk, let's do it tomorrow." You can't skip out with headphones rocking on that stage, when you're that guy. Big deal? No. But, was there a better course of action? Yes.
Looking forward, I have no idea where Lebron will be after next year. Cavs owner, Dan Gilbert, certainly will conduct the largest offensive campaign since Normandy (anniversary is today, June 6), and he just guaranteed a championship. I like it, and I hope Lebron will.
